As part of your child’s educational experience at Moreland, we aim to promote personal wellbeing and development through a comprehensive taught programme of Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education that gives our young people the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live healthy, safe, productive and fulfilled lives, both now and in the future.

From April 2021 the Department for Education made Relationships and Sex Education a compulsory component in all schools. We consulted with parents about our RSE policy and curriculum and welcome discussion around it. Please speak to your child's teacher or Ruth who leads PSHE/RSE if you have questions or comments.

What does the new guidance mean?

The new guidance focuses on healthy relationships and keeping children safe in the modern world. It also covers a wide range of topics relating to physical and mental health, wellbeing, safeguarding and healthy relationships. Learning about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up, it will give young people the information, skills and positive values to have safe, fulfilling relationships and will help them take responsibility for their own well-being. All of the sessions will be age-appropriate and meet the needs of all pupils in the class.

This curriculum is very similar to what we have been teaching in PSHE for a number of years and you can look at the overview of all the content on the website. We will also share some sample lesson content so you can see an example of the type of materials used in lessons.

You still have the right to withdraw your child from sex education but not from Relationships education. The content that you can withdraw from is highlighted in yellow on the RSE curriculum overview within the policy document. We would advise any parent considering withdrawing their child from sex education to have a conversation with the class teacher or a member of the Senior Leadership Team first so we can share the lesson content with you before you make a decision. We will not be teaching the optional Y6 lessons on HIV and contraception.
