Claire Ealding – Pilot  “My first dream was to be an astronaut. I changed my mind lots of times, but when I got to big school, I realised I wanted to be a pilot.

“A typical day is hard to describe, they’re quite different: I’ll wake up in one country and go to bed in another! But I always start by having breakfast with my crew, then we drive to the airport. We don’t use the normal airports; we have special places just for private planes. We fuel the plane, then do the safety checks and lots of other checks before we get off the ground. We might fly for just an hour or it could be 13 hours: it can be quite a long day!

“To get my job I did Physics, English and Maths at school, and then I went to university, where I also did my flight training. It took me three years to quality but that’s because I did a degree. You have to do 14 exams and 250 hours of flight training, but you could do it in a year and a half.

“What I like best about my job is seeing all sorts of countries. I’ve been to so many wonderful places it’s hard to say which is my favourite, but I think I’d say Hawaii. We flew to Honolulu, went to the beach, climbed a volcano: it was beautiful.

“I do have another dream for the future: I want to be an air accident investigator. That will take more training.”
